OH SO BIG
OH SO BIG was published as a limited edition printed magazine, edition of 100 in 2011. The magazine examines issues of race, pornography, and sexuality by re contextualizing soft-core porn from the1970's. By inverting the male gaze with collage methods the new magazine subverts the intention of the original materials. Racial content of the imagery reflects the social times and are presented with a contemporary female point of view.
The back story is that around 2011, I was frustrated and irritated by Donald Trump’s birther movement conspiracy claims suggesting that President Barack Obama was not born in the USA. I found Trump’s claims to be racist, divisive and without merit. Trump did not want a black man in the "White House." With this piece I wanted to give birth to a collage magazine that would challenge this undercurrent of racism. The cover is a nod to Michelle Obama and the interior mixes pages and elements from 70s’ soft-core porn magazines. The resulting magazine, OH, SO BIG confronts contemporary American fears by using sexual imagery as a platform for discourse.
